A Complete Guide to Fall 2017's Top Runway Trends

time2017/03/22

1.Americana vibes, a powerful way to wear red, and vintage-inspired everything. Here, a comprehensive look back at the FW17 season.
VINTAGE-INSPIRED FURS

2.Last season it was all about the statement fur, but for fall 2017 we're going back to basics. No frills, just fur. Yeezy, J.W. Anderson, and Vetements all featured classic, vintage-inspired coats that looked like they were plucked from an estate sale.

3.GLITERATTI BOOTS
Sparkle and shine in this fresh boot trend. Chanel's space age go-go pair will take you out of this world, and the Rihanna-worn Saint Laurent ones will make you feel like a star. Consider this the white boot of fall—aka, a must have.

4.WESTERN FRONT
This season's crop of cowboy-inspired looks—including Raf Simons' debut collection for Calvin Klein—reimagines what we think of the old-timey trend. But it's not so quiet on the Western front, with modern takes on the steel-toed boot, leather vests, cowhide prints, and kitschy cacti.

5.'70S PLAID
When you hear plaid, you typically think of '90s grunge. But this season is all about the bright plaid from the '70s. The versatile print was crafted into classic coats at Prada, statement pants at Tome, and even premiered as a formal gown  at Jenny Packham.

6.RETRO HATS
Tired of beanies? Fashion heavyweights like Marc Jacobs, Maison Margiela, and Coach 1941 are throwing it back to brimmed caps and bucket hats featuring vintage textiles like shearling and fur.

7.VICTORIAN COLLARS
This fall, you'll be neck deep in Victorian-inspired collars. It's the turtleneck's fancy older sister (or great aunt, even). Brands like John Galliano and Kenzo took things literally in Shakespearean white, while Frame and Lemaire modernized it in crisp poplin.

8.LEISURE SUITS
The latest in cozy wear, the leisure suit, is what we like to call track suit-adjacent. It's a far cry from your typical athleisure look, with Chloé's cozy set in suede and Ashish's in technicolor sequins. To elevate the look (and convince yourself that it's OK to wear sweats outside), wear them with stilettos the way Rihanna styled her show for Fenty Puma.

9.BROAD SHOULDERS
You're not borrowing from the boys this season, but from the men. Grandpas, to be exact. Oversized menswear blazers were spotted at Alexander Wang, Dries Van Noten, and Off-White, resolving the once never-ending debate on whether shoulder pads should return (they should).

10.NYLON COATS
The nylon coats seen at Michael Kors, Stella McCartney, and Céline are the transitional outerwear of your dreams. Chic, super wearable, and can be conveniently packed away in your suitcase without the fear of wrinkling.

11.DECONSTRUCTED CLASSICS
Diane von Furstenberg, Burberry, and others are taking the kitchen sink route when it comes to textiles. Meanwhile, Ports 1961 removed entire sleeves for a modern reimagination of the power suit. All in all, mixed materials and topsy-turvy classics are the new normal this fall.

12.FISHNETS
Have designers noticed that Instagram feeds are littered with ladies in fishnet tights? Our guess is yes, because they're presenting the stocking trend in new ways It-girls will love. Instead of wearing them with destroyed denim à la Pia Mia, we saw them with feminine dresses at Jason Wu and schoolboy blazers at Cinq à Sept.

13.COUCH FLORALS
Designers looked to their aunt's living room this season, applying vintage floral prints to everything from casual tops to princess gowns. It's window (and couch) dressing, taken literally.

14.MID-LENGTH SKIRTS
Major designers like Christian Dior, Loewe, and Victoria Beckham are pirouetting toward ballet beautiful styles this fall. They showcased a flattering skirt hemmed at the calf with full, flouncy movement.

15.BUTTONED-UP
Lace-up details are on their way out this year, and we finally know why: buttons. Industry favorites like Rosie Assoulin, Sies Marjan, and more are doing choose-your-own-adventure slits with buttons down the side of skirts and pants.

16.CHOCOLATE BROWN
The chocolatey hue everyone wore in slack-form and lip liner during the '90s (think Kate Beckinsale) has been on the waysid, but now—thanks to The Row, Jil Sander, and Acne Studios—brown is definitely the new black.

17.WIDE BELTS
Wide waist belts are making their comeback this season, and in all the right proportions. Strap in for fall with options from Isabel Marant, Monse, and Brock Collection.

18.RUSSIAN DOLL VIBES
Fur collars and detailed floral embroidery sprinkled the collections of Gucci, Altuzarra, and Kate Spade New York alike. Take note for next season and think opulent details for your next fall investment.

19.FORMAL VELVET
Designers are still crushing on velvet, but this season they're cutting designs from the rich fabric for jewel-tone formalwear. Keep this in mind when dressing for a fall wedding.

20.BELTED COATS
A major styling tip from designers like Louis Vuitton, Miu Miu, and Sacai. Be it a statement fur or a leather trench, refine your outerwear with the easy addition of a waist-cinching belt.
