10 Styling Tips We Learned From the 2017 Pre-Fall Collections

We're mad we didn't think to wear our scarf this way first.

Pre-fall—the collection that hits racks between July and September—is generally the most wearable. These clothes have to be versatile (to accommodate the varying temps of those months), layer-able, and easy. We've also come to expect pre-fall to hand over accessible styling tricks we can apply to our IRL wardrobes. Here, see how Chanel, Versace, and more of fashion's heavyweights are influencing the way we dress.

1.Shrug Your Scarf

Marled Scottish knitwear is part of Chanel's DNA (see the fashion house's Edinburgh-inspired pre-fall collection from 2013), but the styling of the nubby scarves this season was a stroke of genius. The scarves were draped in front of models' necks, crossed over in the back, and then wrapped around each arm for a half-shrug-half-scarf accessory. It's so much better than letting your extra-long scarf drag along the pavement.

2.Sheer Layers

Pre-fall is intended for transitional weather, so layering is key. Take Max Mara's mesh long sleeve for a spin during those confusing months when a tank is too little and a sweater is too much.

3.Wear a Bag Under Your Coat

Ever struggle with your bag worn over a heavy coat? Wearing a soft leather crossbody atop a scratchy wool coat with a heavy-duty zipper and say good-bye to that scratch-free finish. Versace offered a simple solution to try ASAP: Wear your bag under your outerwear. Duh.

4.Crossbody Necklaces

Extra-long necklaces are on the rise, but Jonathan Saunders' second collection for Diane von Furstenberg is already outside the box. Saunders styled the necklaces across the body, giving us another reason to invest in strands of pearls.

5.Hoodies With the Fur

Luxury athleisure has been on-trend for a minute, but Sally LaPointe's addition of a fur stole is on a whole new level of lazy-luxury we're aspiring to. Just grab your favorite worn-in sweater and sling a fur under the hood for the same look.

6.Track Pants Under Dresses

Fancy track pants were seen last season at Tory Burch Sport, but leave it to Gucci to wear it in a completely different way. They styled a pair of slim track pants under a dress for a sporty touch—and extra warmth.

7.High Waist Bags

Fanny packs are typically worn at, well, your fanny, but this season's Gucci collection aimed a little higher, literally. They strapped their models' bum bags at the waist instead, for an inspired take on the purse world's most questionable silhouette.

8.Double Up on Belts

No need to decide between a tasseled belt and a classic buckle, because Rag & Bone is giving the green light to wear them simultaneously. Take the brand's lead and match color schemes to keep the look from going overboard.

9.Off-the-Shoulder Sweater Wrap

If you combined the forces of Carlton Banks and the off-the-shoulder top, you'd get this look from Public School. They tied a sweater tied across the chest, imitating the OFS neckline. Just try not to move too much—the knit is bound to slide down. In other words, this street-style look is not for beginners.

10.Half-On Coats

Say farewell to editor's shoulders—when you hang your coat on your shoulders without placing your arms inside the sleeves—because 3.1 Philip Lim is blazing a new nonsensical-yet-stylish way to precariously wear your outerwear. They slung a trench over the left side of the body, but left the opposite side undone, and cinched the belt for an avant-garde silhouette.
